I have no pride in Britian anymore…

I’m 17 and getting to the point where I have very, very little pride in Britain anymore. I want to be proud of my nation, yet it’s very difficult to be proud in a country where patriotism is perceived as racism and is actively discouraged. People don’t even fly British flags because of fear of being associated with racism, and there have been cases of local councils even requesting a British person remove a flag or any display of patriotism from their property so they don’t offend another culture or religion.

We have to suck up to other races in our own country! The UK is experiencing a major problem with unskilled immigrants, who have just been allowed to flood into the UK, and take unskilled work at minimum wage beause they can afford to do so. They live about 6-7 to a small house, so their costs are instantly lower and so they can afford to live at minimum wage. Plus, they send the money back to their own countries and don’t even spend most of it in the country. The British youth are really losing out to these immigrants, yet if you say anything in the UK, you’re branded a racist, it truly is a sorry state this country has got into in terms of immigration.

The immigrants are also largely unassimilated too, a lot struggle to speak even the most rudimentary of English, they form their own communities which often become high-crime and virtually no-go areas for white people, they expect the government to give them grants to build religious buildings for them, and if they don’t get it, they pull the race card, and also, we’ve got our own home grown terrorists here. The bombings of the London Underground, and also of Glasgow Airport were both perpetrated by Muslims with British citizenship – this country is in a ridiculous state and things are going to have to start changing, yet if anyone stands up for their nation, they’re accused of being racist, if any politician said anything, they’d be sacked immediately. You can be arrested in the UK for saying anything against immigration as it comes under "anti-discrimination laws".

This country is truly pathetic. I have no pride in it anymore.

Yeah, I know I’ll get the typical left wing brainwashed Brit accusing me of being racist, but I’m not racist at all. I enjoy traveling and experiencing other cultures and I actively do so, however, I wish to be able to return to a country I can be proud of and one that actively regulates and controls it’s borders. I have absolutely no problem with SKILLED immigrants who are able to fill job shortages in the UK which require skilled expertise and lots of job experience.

I also feel that a person should only be given a work visa if there is no British person available to fill that position and the job has been actively advertised to the LOCAL job market. If all that has been done, then I see no issue with giving a job to someone who is truly going to benefit the economy and make a COMMITMENT to assimilate to the culture of this country, and to learn the language. However, this is not the case in Britain, too many British youth are losing out to unskilled immigrants invited in by the Labour party who are lapped up by employers as cheap labour, while our own kids have to compete with foreign unskilled workers. They accuse us of being unwilling to do the jobs, that is complete and utter bullshit, most of the jobs go to immigrants through agencies for minimum wage.

Also, British people struggle to live on minimum wage, their circumstances are very different to most foreigners. Most foreigners are only here for a short period of time and rent one house to between 6-7 of them, their costs are significantly lower, as they split costs. British people can not do this and should not have to do this, as the costs of living in Britian long-term are astronomical, it costs roughly £5 or $10 for a gallon of fuel in this country.

These are my views, and if I’m racist for standing up for my country, then so be it. I am getting to the point where I am seriously considering moving to another country. I want something to be proud of, and at the moment, there is no pride in being British, as pride in Britain equates to racism.

Sorry if this sounds a bit like a rant, I just wanted to know if there’s any one else out there who feels the same way?

Lookie mate, I don’t reckon you’re racist, I just reckon you’ve got the wrong idea.

First off, I’d like to ge the idea of unskilled immigrants out of your head.
You complain about lefties- fair enough really.
But you’ll notice that the Thatcher and Major governments, both right-wingers, appealed to former commonwealth countries to send doctors etc, ‘cos we didn’t have enough brittish ones.
What’s the result? We have loads of south Asian doctors and nurses. Why? Because we really needed them.
So you can’t really say those are unskilled.
I reckon you’ll find a lot of those south Asian immigrants are amazingly qualified.
A fair few around the place I live are the most inteligent people I know. A load, and I mean a load have passed mountains of exams to program our British telephone networks.
I don’t know how to do it, I reckon you don’t either, but they’re fucking brains, I tell you. And they’re all people who call themselves British, and are proud of it.
They’re stellar people, and they don’t at all fit into the scrounger catergory.

Oh, another thing, you dislike left wingers, but you’re opposed to the free market? I get this from the fact that you think only Brits should have British jobs. I don’t mean this as an attack, at all, don’t get me wrong. But "saving" British jobs for British people is a left-wing idea.

I reckon strong national unity is a good thing, but I’m open to accepting other cultures and people into that nation.

You’ve raised good points, mate, and writing this reply was good fun, so hopefully we can get some discussion out of this.

Hope to hear back from you soon.

Landlord offered me his heart, what should I do?

I am a 32 year old woman from Glasgow, Scotland and earlier in the year I moved to London to study for my masters degree. While looking for a flat share I was put in touch with a single man of 48 also origonally from Glasgow who was looking for a flatmate. He is a performer and is often out of town working. The rent was offered at a reduced amount in return for some light house work and making sure that there would be things like milk and bread in the house for him coming back from working away (he leaves me money for this) as he said he was fed up coming home to an empty house. We get on well and I like him a lot and when he is home we often have dinner together or watch a DVD etc and it’s quite cosy. However I did pick up on some signals from him that made me think he might be interested in me romantically. My suspicions were confirmed by a note he left for me last sunday before he left for the some gigs up north. In it he basically tells me that he has developed strong feelings for me over the past 8 months and hope that we might share more than friendship. I am confused about this, I like him a lot but worry as I am already living with him. I think that he feels women tend to reject him out of hand as he thinks of himself as ugly and that perhaps I have by living with him been able to see beyond that. I have but it just seems risky to start something with my land lord and I would struggle to get another flat I could afford!

What should I do?
I don’t thin it is just about sex his note mentions marriage also, but of course depending on how I feel about it.

and what… prey tell…. does this have to do with MARRIAGE AND DIVORCE?????

Going to America for 6 months.?

Hey, im in my final year at high school, and have decided to take a gap year before heading to university. I plan to study media and film or psychology in either Stirling or Glasgow. Starting in Sept 2010.
From August 09 – Dec 09, i plan to get a job and earn money to fund this trip to america. Then in January 2010 i plan to go to america for 6 months. However, i don’t know what part, and how easy it would be to get a job. Hopefully i will have secured a job before i go out. I would prefer to move in with a flat mate, as then i wouldn’t need to buy furniture. Does anyone have any info that could help?
Like how to go about finding a flat mate?
How much rent is likely to be?
What part of the usa to move to? I’d prefer, new york or l.a but ive heard there expensive and dangerous.
I’ll be 18 at the time i go.

Thanks.

You may visit in the u.S. under the visa waiver program for up to 90 days..but you CANNOT work, and you cannot under any circumstances, get an extension on your visit. If you apply for and receive a B-2 tourist visa, you may stay for up to 6 months, but, again you CANNOT work. The only legal way for a foreign citizen to work in the U.S. is to apply to immigrate and get a green card…which takes years and an incredible amount of luck…OR…have a college degree and badly needed job skill, then find an employer to give you a contract and sponsor your work visa….not a possibility in your circumstances. So if you want to stay 6 months, you will need to be financially prepared for that. New York and L.A. are unbelievably expensive, and NOT typical of the rest of the country. Many people want to do what you want to do, and many americans would like to do the same in the u.K….the big problem is that you cannot work in a foreign country without a work permit…and those are nearly impossible to get anywhere.

The Hilltoppers – Only You And You Alone

The Hilltoppers started out as a vocal trio consisting of Jimmy Sacca (born 26 July 1929 in Lockport, New York), Seymore Spiegelman (born 1 October 1930 in Seneca Falls, New York) and Don McGuire (born 7 October 1931 in Hazard, Kentucky) who were all students together at the Western Kentucky University in the town of Bowling Green. Sacca was acquainted with a pianist by the name of Billy Vaughn (born 12 April 1919 in Glasgow, Kentucky) who although considerably older than the trio of friends fitted their vocal style well and was drafted into the group as a full time member. He brought with him a song he had written called “Tryin” which the foursome recorded and sent the tape to a local radio DJ who in turn drew it to the attention of Randy Wood, the head of Dot Records in Nashville, Tennessee who duly signed the Hilltoppers to the Dot label. The single was a slow burner, breaking region by region but eventually secured a place in the top 10, peaking at no.7. They adopted a college look of beanies and letter sweaters that would become their trademark and appeared on Ed Sullivan’s Toast of the Town in October 1952 and followed this with The Perry Como show in November as well as appearances with Patti Page, Kate Smith, Sammy Kaye and Milton Berle. Jimmy Sacca had been called up for military service and the Hilltoppers went into the studio to record a series of tracks that could be released while he was away. After “Tryin”, a whole series of hits followed, “PS I Love You”, “I’d Rather Die Young”, “To Be Alone”, “Love Walked In”, “From the Vine Came the Grape” and “Till Then”, all top 10s, making the Hilltoppers one of the top US vocal groups of the 1950s but rock n roll was on the way and their clean cut college look and style was rapidly becoming old fashioned. Billy Vaughn also left the group to begin his orchestral solo career in 1955, his place in the Hilltoppers taken by Chuck Schrouder. Vaughn went on to have a very successful chart career beginning with the no.2 hit “Melody Of Love” and included other top 10 singles “The Shifting Whispering Sands (Parts 1 & 2)”, “Raunchy” and “Sail Along Silvery Moon” while The Hilltoppers adapted their style in an attempt to appeal to mid to late 1950s teenagers and recorded a series of songs that competed with the top vocal group of the late 1950s, The Platters, indeed one of those songs was “Only You (And You Alone)”, composed by Buck Ram for The Platters and they also enjoyed their biggest US hit with “Marianne”, originally by Terry Gilkyson and The Easy Riders. In the UK they only had three hit singles, Only you which hit no.3 in May 1956, a re-release a first recording “Tryin” and “Marianne” in the Spring of 1957. The group remained a fixture of the Dot Records roster for the next decade, finally splitting in 1963. They reformed briefly in the mid 1970s and remade their biggest hits for ABC Paramount, continuing to perform until 1975. After The Hilltoppers broke up, Jimmy Sacca worked for Dot Records in the early 1960s before forming a new Hilltoppers group which toured worldwide from 1968 to 1979. In 1979 Sacca and his son established a talent agency. He lives in Jackson, Mississippi with his wife Ann. Seymour Spiegelman also worked for Dot Records, and later for Peter Pan Industries. He died on 13 February 1987 in New York. Don McGuire started a real estate business in Lexington, and also worked as Western Kentucky University’s liaison with the state legislature. He lives in Lexington, Kentucky with his wife Maxine. Billy Vaughn decided not to travel with the group, becoming the music director of Dot Records. He also embarked upon his career as a well-known musician, arranger and composer, hitting the charts in 1954 with the instrumental “Melody of Love” as the Billy Vaughn Orchestra. He died on 26 September 1991 in Escondido, California. ~ Sharon Mawer, All Music Guide

Lyrics:

Save you’re breath
And i’ll talk instead
And you’ll just drop dead and stay, away from me.
You’ve got me wrapped
around your fingers
But i’ve got you figured out
i’m down but not out

She said, love is love is for the blind
And you gave me yours without your eyes
So why?
Your more shy

I hate to say i told you so
Your never gonna let this go
With every little look she gave and every move she made
She’s got you on the tip of your toes.

Catch You Breath
I know your upset
But I am resilliant to it, this test

I got you down
Into a silence
And I’ve got, evidence
That your down and your out

She said, love is love is for the blind
And you gave me yours without your eyes
So why?
Your more shy

I hate to say i told you so
Your never gonna let this go
With every little look she gave and every move she made
She’s got you on the tip of your toes.

You know, this is how it goes
Nothing lasts forever
That you should know
And how it shows
You on the roads
You feel so low
Just know, I am with you

I told you so
I’m never gonna let this go
With every little look i’ll give
And every move i make

I hate to say i told you so
You’re never gonna let this go
With every little look she gives and every move she made
She’s got you on the tip of your toes
(Oh oh oh oh oh whoa whoa)
On the tip of your toes
(Oh oh oh oh oh whoa whoa)
(Oh oh oh oh oh whoa)
(Oh oh oh oh oh whoa whoa)
(Oh oh oh oh oh whoa)
