Glasgow Boyne Celebrations 2009 – Govan Protestant Boys
Oct 31st, 2009 by admin
This band is very popular so here are two clips of the Govan Protestant Boys.
The first shows the band heading up St Vincent Street on the annual Big Walk on 4 July 2009 to Kelvingrove Park.
The second is on the way home and is shot in the relative gloom on the Broomielaw under the railway bridge into Glasgow Central. The acoustics here are resonant – a fact which is not wasted on either band or followers. Everything sounds twice as loud, so things get very noisy indeed. There’s a lovely roar at 0:49 – I suspect that quite a few of you will want to listen to that bit again and again.
In the unlikely event that you’ve strayed this far without knowing what you are letting yourself in for, you may be wondering what sort of hole this is and why the police are standing around when there’s clearly a riot going on. Not so. There is nothing for the police to do. Although raucous and exuberant it is surprisingly safe and self disciplined. These guys know how to look after themselves and each other (and you, if needs be). In the unlikely event that anyone even bumps into you you’ll find the apologies immediate and generous.
If you are a tourist, for maximum interaction with the locals we recommend putting on a Celtic top before joining in with the festivities. You can pick these up at The Celtic Connection in Argyle Street. Make sure you ask for a blue one. But if they’re out, a green one will set you up just fine.
